Sow peonies

It's now your turn to spread happiness
& plant peonies in your home!

It's wonderful to be able to pick your own peonies and create fresh flower bouquets. Not to mention the joy of giving them away! In addition, peonies will make your landscaping beautiful and distinguished. Here are some tips on how to take good care of them and ensure they are properly planted.

First, you should know that a peony has the shape of a root, not a bulb. It is generally planted in the fall. You must plant your peony before the first ground frost. September and October are therefore ideal months for planting.

Choose a sunny location and well-drained soil. Peonies don't like to have "wet feet" but they love snow, which acts as a real protector. So, make sure to choose a location where there will be enough snow in winter. Some peonies can live up to 80 years, and it is best not to move them often. Make sure to choose a prime location for them!

If you are planting several peonies, make sure the plants are three feet apart to allow them to root, grow, and flourish well.

  • Dig a hole 2 to 3 times larger than the peony root and deep enough so that the eyes (the pink buds) of the peony point upwards and are covered with approximately 2 inches (5 cm) of soil maximum. If the eyes are too deep, the peony will have difficulty growing. If the eyes are too high, there is a risk of frost or breakage.
  • The planting depth therefore varies depending on the root you are planting.
  • Add potting soil, compost, well-decomposed manure, or bone meal to your soil. Do not add fresh manure.

Cover your root with soil. Tamp the soil well to prevent your root from lifting and moving in winter. By following these instructions, you will have your first peony flowers next summer.
